ôThere are 3 volumes in the UL fire Resistant Directories as you can see pictures on the screen.á We will talk a little about each one so you will know the differences between them.
TODAYÆS FOCUS IS VOLUME 1.á Volume 1 includes beams, floors, roofs, columns, walls and partitions.á We will be drilling down in this book and doing some exercises to become more familiar and comfortable with using the UL Volume 1.
Fire rated assemblies are based on hourly ratings.á There are 2 standard tests:á ASTM E119 and NFPA 251.

Here is the chart at the bottom of page 1.á It is called the Numbering System for Fire Rated Assemblies.á We will come back to this.
ôPlease turn to page 1 of volume 1 and look at the chart at the bottom of the page.á When looking for a UL design number the first thing to look at is the far left hand column titled Groups of Construction.á In this column you will pick the structural element you are using on the project.á If your project calls for floor-ceilings, concrete and cellular steel floor you design will start with the letters A, B or C.á For concrete and steel floor unitsà the design will start with D,E or Fàöá Continue down the slide.

Finally, there is Unprotected.á Unprotected is not fastened like membrane protection or sprayed on like Direct Applied but is protected using masonry or brick block.á These designs will fall between 900-999.
